How To Plan A Party + Mason's Superhero Birthday

When I envisioned this blog and how it would look, I knew I wanted it to be much more than just fashion. Don't get me wrong, fashion is my first love and that's the foundation of this blog! But I also wanted to make sure to include other things, such as home decor, DIY's, healthy eating and habits, and party planning!! etc etc. So, todays post is going to be full of tips to planning a perfect party, as well as inspiration from my son's 4th birthday party, which was superhero themed. Love a good classic! I will link all products at the bottom ;) I will also share info from my mom's 50th party I planned last year, just so you can get a comparison of two different parties.

ONE. Make A Budget

Make a budget and stick with it! It is so easy to get overwhelmed with pretty things and easily spend way more than you wanted to. This is an important first step as it will help you prioritize what you want and where you want to spend more money.

TWO. Create A Theme

Again, it is so easy to get overwhelmed! In our world full of Pinterest and Instagram, you will find your mind going all over the place. Think of a theme or color scheme that fits your style or the style of the honoree. Last year, I planned my mom's 50th birthday party. I knew she loved mint so I stuck with a color scheme of mint and peach. (I wish I had gotten some good photos of that one! It turned out beautiful!) My son loves Spiderman and wanted to involve him in his party, so I went with a good ol' superhero theme.

THREE. Numbers!

Know how big or small your party will be. Do you want it to be more intimate with only close friends and/or family? Loud and crazy with as many friends and small children around? Each party has its own vibe! For my mom's 50th, I decided to invite her close friends, people that have continued to be special to her. Of course, some of them had kids so they were welcome too! For Mason's party, we let him choose who he wanted to invite. We didn't want any of his friends left out so we helped him out a bit ;)

FOUR. Menu

Decide on your food and beverages. Do you want a nice, sit down meal? Simple finger foods and snacks? This can easily be your biggest expense, so keep that in mind when planning! For my mom's party, I had Olive Garden cater. They were actually very affordable (I used google and even found a coupon code online!) and who doesn't love Italian?! They had so many great options to fit any budget and food tastes. For Mason's party, I went with finger foods, though I still wanted it all to tie in to the theme!

I cut PB&J sandwiches with a star cookie cutter for Captain America shields. (I had adult food on my kitchen island, buffalo chicken wraps, more fruit, black bean dip etc)

I added a 'choose your super power' sign and different super powers to fruit and veggie bowls.

FIVE.  Dessert

Obviously, at a birthday party you need birthday cake, or some sort of dessert for the blowing out of candles and the serenading with the birthday song. You can see the amazing Spiderman cake we had below. Cakes can get pretty pricey so I asked a good friend if I could hire her to make it. She makes aaaamazing cakes and this one was soo yummy! (I think I'm going to have to tell her she can't make any more of my cakes, it was seriously so good that I was eating the leftovers every day for a week! #guilty #sorrynotsorry) Anyways. For my mom's party, I knew I need to have white chocolate raspberry cheesecake. She is a huge fan of Cheesecake Factory's white chocolate raspberry cheesecake. Since that would have been super pricey, I decided to make mini ones myself and you can find the recipe HERE. They were not hard to make and they were SO good! My moms aid they tasted better than Cheesecake Factory! That is saying  a lot!! Basically, my point is, you can find cheaper options! Know where you want your money to go and make it work!

SIX. Decorations

This is where your theme will come in handy. It will help you not get (too ;) overwhelmed with your choices. Browse Pinterest or catalogs to get inspiration , but ask yourself the following questions. Does this item fit into my budget? If it does, do I want to spend that much on it? Is it something my guests/honoree will appreciate? Does it go with my theme? Stick to your them and remember, sometimes simpler is better!

SEVEN. Guests

What will your guest list look like? Will there be kids? Make your activities age appropriate. At my mom's party there were a few families with young kiddos, as well as my own. So I set up a separate table with arts and crafts to keep them busy while the adults chatted.

For Mason's party we had several games and activities! I created villain targets, by printing out villains and coloring them. I then glued them to some colored posters and printed their names on speech bubbles. I made Venom, Doc Oc, and The Joker. Unfortunately we forgot to take any pictures of the kids doing this too I had to dig these villains out of the trash to take some photos! Haha. I then wrapped silly string containers with these spider man print outs and the kids went to town shooting the "bad guys"! They seriously had a blast and it was so fun to watch.

I also had a separate table set up with markers and these cool mask from Oriental Trading. I had a sign on the table that said "Welcome Superheros! Please choose a mask." I of course, forgot photos of this table as well, but you can see my lovely daughter and the birthday boy coloring their masks below.

We had a photo booth set up in the living room with these fun props, and this super affordable backdrop. It was a big hit and so fun! I plan to print out photos of each family to send with their thank you cards. Super fun! I think it entertained the adults more than the kiddos haha.

And lastly, we rented a bouncy house. All Mason wanted was a spider man cake and a bouncy house. The kids loved it of course and it killed a lot of time! If you are in the Denver area, I recommend 5280 JUMPERS. They were by far the most affordable and their bouncer was clean! Super friendly and helpful. I did  a lot of research on bouncers and I was extremely pleased with them. We rented their 3 in 1 toddler bouncer with slide, and it was perfect Mason and his little buddies!

The villains. We just hung them on our fence outside and let the kids go at it!
